The rise of Saul

The rise of Saul Notes on I Samuel by Ivan Ho   29 May 2016   Saul was one of the saddest stories in the Bible. A man who had been anointed by God, called by God as commander of His people, touched by God, empowered by the Spirit of God, used by God to prophesy publicly….. then lost his God given position due to his carelessness and disobedience. Let’s recall how God had special grace for Saul who had a great start to his ministry before his fall. He was a tall and most handsome man in all of Israel and son of a mighty man of power. (1 Sam 9:1-2) God changed his destiny. While Saul was looking for his father’s donkey, he was reminded about a man of God, Samuel, who changed his destiny entirely by delivering to him the word of God. (1 Sam 9:3-27) God had a special grace and plan for him and spoke to him his destiny through the prophet Samuel. (1 Sam 9:25-27) Saul was...

Grace to build

Grace to build by Ivan Ho 27 May 2020   Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God, that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things which pertain to God. For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient— in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation, but as it is written:...

I Samuel 12

I Samuel 12 Notes by Ivan Ho   27 May 2016   1 Samuel 12 In this chapter, Samuel who was now an old man, poured out his heart to the people whom he had served since he was young. He was not just a preacher of sermons but a national leader who connected people to his God. There are a number of things one can learn from his life and his ways of leadership (his life rather than just leadership skills). He listened to the heart cry of the people. Now Samuel said to all Israel: “Indeed I have heeded your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.” I Samuel 12:1 NKJV   He heeded the voice of people in demanding for a king, and responded by taking up this matter with the Lord. He was not a dictatorial leader who only knew how to impose his ways on the people whom he served. His communication with the people wasn’t a one way monologue. The...

Know who is speaking to you

Know who is speaking to you by Ivan Ho 17 May 2020 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I...

Submit to God, Resist the devil

Submit to God, Resist the devil by Ivan Ho   16 May 2016   Many people respond to circumstances and the things happening around them: the things that they can see, hear and touch with their physical senses. Some respond to stimuli in the soulish realm, things that appeal to their soul, things that touch their emotions. Mankind, whether we are aware of it or not, are primarily spirit beings, and our spirit can either respond to the Spirit of God or to demonic spirits. If we don’t know who is speaking to us, we will respond to the wrong kinds of spirits. Eve responded to the satanic spirit which resided in the serpent, who appealed to her mind, emotions as well as her physical senses, which led to her downfall. That is why our spirit needs to respond to the Spirit of God at all times and be led by the Spirit of God. Even those who are yet to be born again followers of Christ...
