Jesus healing the nobleman’s son

by Ivan Ho  22 Feb 2022

So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.

Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.

And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.

This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
John 4:46‭-‬54 NKJV

According to John, Jesus healing the nobleman’s son was the second miracle Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee at the beginning of his public ministry, and probably the first of countless divine healings he did since then.

There are few important lessons we can learn from this true story.

  1. Jesus heals

Jesus ministered to many who were poor, rejected, needy, social outcasts wherever he went. On this occasion, the man who came to Jesus was a nobleman. In today’s society, he would be Sir or Lord so and so, a man with a high social status in the society. Like a lot of us, the nobleman was facing a desperate situation because his son was sick and dying. The nobleman would have access to some of the best physicians and medicines available in town but obviously they were not able to heal the boy. The nobleman probably heard about the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine in a nearby town of Cana and in his desperation, travelled all the way from Capernaum to seek Jesus for help. He was looking for divine intervention when nothing else seemed to work.

Not only was the nobleman’s son miraculously healed, many who came to Jesus with all sorts of conditions, including the blind, deaf, lepers, lamed, you name it, were healed by the almighty power of Jesus.

“What about things like cancer… Why did so many people including believers die from cancers? ” some may say. My view is this: Most cancer patients died not because their conditions are incurable as many were led to believe but because they were often put through all kinds of hazardous and toxic treatment methods being adopted by the modern day cancer industries which have been largely creating fears and hopelessness in patients rather than cures. I am not playing down the threat of chronic illnesses such as cancers. With prayers of faith, supplemented by holistic treatments and proper rehabilitation, any sickness will be healed in the name of Jesus! There is no such thing as ‘incurable disease’ as far as God is concerned.

When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”
Matthew 8:16‭-‬17 NKJV

  1. Approach Jesus in faith

Jesus did not initiate the healing process but instead it was the nobleman who did when he took the journey to pursue Jesus to seek healing for his son.

If you took the initiative to consult your doctor when you were sick instead of staying in your sick bed doing nothing, you can actively approach Jesus in faith to seek for His healing. The nobleman took a 26.5 km journey from Capernaum to Cana to sought after Jesus, thanks to his faith in the power of Jesus who turned water into wine. Had he decided to stay home doing nothing, his son could have died.

  1. God is not confined by space and time

The nobleman initially invited Jesus to go back with him to heal his son who was about to die. Instead of going back with the nobleman, Jesus said: “Go your way, your son lives”. The nobleman believed in what Jesus said and went back home and found his son healed. Not only that, his son was healed around the same time when Jesus gave him the word: “Go your way, your son lives”. When Jesus speaks, it’s already done! Our job is to believe his words and follow his instructions and his words have already come to past the moment he speaks.

God can heal you anywhere anytime because God is not confined by space and time.

If you ask the father for a fish, he will give you a fish, and if you ask him for healing, he will give you healing. Your prayer of faith will bring positive results.

  1. Stay on course in the Father’s business

Jesus declined the nobleman’s request to return with him to his house and sent him back saying: “Go your way, your son lives”. So why didn’t Jesus go back with the man? After all, it could have been no more than half a day’s journey from Cana to Capernaum. Many ministers would have jumped at the opportunity to connect with an important man in town and thereby build up their personal profiles and fame. Imagine the kind of attention Jesus would have attracted by miraculously healing the nobleman’s boy.

I’m sure Jesus would have gone to personally minister to the sick boy had it been the Father’s will to do so. But instead he continued on his journey with his disciples because the primary purpose of Jesus wasn’t to heal the sick even though he healed many who came to him. As a human person during his walk on earth, Jesus could only physically be at one place at a certain time, and he was always at the right place at the right time being led by the Spirit of God in obedience to his heavenly Father. His purpose wasn’t to maximise ministry opportunities but to fulfill the will of the Father.

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
John 5:19 KJV

For some of us, this is perhaps one of the hardest and at the same time easiest thing to do: to follow the Spirit of God in obedience to the will of the Father instead of being led by endless needs of man and countless opportunities out there.

As human persons, we are limited to being at one place at a time and therefore we don’t want to waste our lives running around here there and everywhere pursuing things outside of God’s will.

  1. Miracles of healing are signs

God is willing to heal us of all kinds of sicknesses and diseases, and that include any infectious diseases such as coronavirus. There is absolutely no disease too big that is beyond God’s miraculous healing power. All Jesus needed was to say the word and the boy who was dying became instantly healed without Jesus being there in person. The nobleman believed in the word of Jesus and followed his instruction and returned to witness the miraculous healing of his son! As the result of his son’s divine healing, the Bible tells us that the nobleman believed, and his whole household as well believed in Jesus!

Miracles are signs to the unbelieving world that reveal the awesome presence and power of Jesus Christ the Son of God. The greatest miracles happen when sinners repent, when they put their faith in Jesus!

Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
John 4:48 NKJV
