Ungodly counsel from godly people

By Ivan Ho  28 May 2018

Ungodly counsel does not have to come from ungodly people. As long as what a person says compromises the word of God, it is ungodly counsel. Ungodly counsel misleads a godly person to make ungodly decisions that leads him or her away from God’s destiny.

How many people have been taken for a ride because they listened to and followed the advices from their fellow churchgoers that sounded good, tickled their fancies, but were not from God? If the devil succeeded in tempting Eve in the garden of Eden with his words in the beginning, is it any surprise that he is doing the same deceptions within the churches today? Did not Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, once tried to counsel his master out of the way of the cross?

Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.  But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Matthew 16:22‭-‬23

When a person continually sidesteps the word of God and imposes his own opinions on things, though he may be a sincere believer, his counsels are ungodly. A godly man does not become ungodly overnight, but over a period of time, he tends to elevate his mind above the word of God. God says one thing but he has other ideas that may sound good but are not of God. His counsels therefore become ungodly no matter how nice and reasonable his ideas may sound. If his opinions contradict with the word of God, they are to be rejected.

It is a sad fact that many people in the church are actually walking in the wrong pathways with the wrong people who give them the wrong counsels. Some even assume that it does not matter what directions they choose, God is walking with them anyway. The truth is: there are some pathways we must not take, some people with whom we must not walk, some advices we must not follow, simply because God is not in it.

“Walk not in the counsel of the ungodly” is a godly counsel from the word of God. It is a command not a suggestion because the well being of your life is dependent on it.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord ; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 1:1‭-‬2
